Situated on just under three acres, this Westwood home we recently completed a full renovation on was built in the 1930s. At 5,500 square feet, it's big, but not in the modern, traditional sense. “It’s more of a rambling house,” as our client describes it. “It doesn’t have any big rooms, but a lot of them. It’s a great place to play hide and seek.”
That was one of the challenges we faced—taking tight spaces and turning them into something functional and contemporary.
The other challenge? The house was originally constructed all out of stone; picture an old, charming French-style chateau which had seen little, if any, love in recent years.
A design question I am regularly asked, and enjoy working through with clients, is how to bring a home that was planned and built in one era towards a more modern feeling. For instance, since this home was constructed totally out of stone, we were limited in how we could change room and wall configurations, or even install recessed lighting. A main priority for this renovation was to expand and add bathrooms—in this day and age, a necessity! One of our favorite tasks as Mackenzie & Company designers is thoughtfully updating and modernizing a home to make the most of it for today's lifestyle. Our approach to design is making a house our client's home. A home that is not only beautiful but fits their lifestyle perfectly.
From start to finish, our client trusted the team at Mackenzie & Company, giving us wide latitude to make design choices that fit with his personal taste and his home’s one-of-a-kind character. “I can just say from my experience with Angela, you have to trust her to make the right decision,” says Clay. “I can’t think of anything she did that I was disappointed in. Everything she did was great. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”
