I had just been saying how much I would love to design the royal nursery for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when, shortly after, the opportunity came along to work with Boston Magazine for a feature in their Spring 2019 Issue. Entitled, "Baby Space," as a part of their Palettes Segment, I was to curate pieces for a nursery-ready mood board. Thus, my design dreams came true.
My concept for this assignment was "A Simple Royal Nursery," for which I planned to draw inspiration from both the expectant Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as well as my own British roots. My own mother, a strong Scottish gal, was always sending "home" for fashion, textiles, and sweets that she could not get in her new country—I myself grew up to become a very American girl with a strong British style.
To make this nursery accessible to both a royal and the everyday expecting parents, my approach leaned Brit + a bit Yank. Of course, who doesn't like all things royal?
With visions of nurseries and soft textures swirling through my head, I knew I wanted to provide a gender-neutral design with feelings of bliss, coziness and a touch of the unexpected. Armed with my love for neutral hues, I began to search for an accent wall covering to give the space that pop I had in mind. At the point when I was beginning to feel what I was looking for just didn't exist, the "Zebra + Friends," as I call it, appeared.
Hints of yellow and chartreuse green became the understated stars of the nursery, while charcoal grays and embroidered fabrics served as great contrast for pillows and upholstery. This design journey jumped into high gear when the palette expanded a little more to include a soft pink (more of a neutral than a "girly" pink) and lots of fun, furry textures came into the mix; accents of vintage silver completed the regal vision for a touch of shine.
Ultimately, what makes this design special is that even if you're not living like a royal, you can still fashion your nursery like one. The Mackenzie + Co. team put together a nursery design and decor guide for you to download and shop as you wish—no British roots required.
